Born in 1997, Taiwan, now based in Granada, Spain. Chia-Chun Xu is an experimental musician , organiser and independent label manager. Xu began performing and creating Harsh Noise under the name ‘Berserk’ in 2015. Renowned for deafening volumes and a stylistic approach imbued with distinct aesthetics during live performances, Xu swiftly garnered recognition. In 2016, Kandala Records released a vinyl split album featuring Berserk alongside Japanoise legend Merzbow. Subsequently, the solo recordings were released by WV Sorcerer Productions in limited cassette. Noteworthy tours took him to the UK, Japan, and Malaysia before the project was temporarily suspended in 2020.
Xu’s practice centers around the No-input Mixing Board, through which he has cultivated a distinctive sonic language that interrogates the boundaries of feedback, noise, and improvisation. His artistic work operates across live performance, experimental composition, and community engagement, with a sustained focus on developing platforms for the circulation and critical reception of noise and experimental sound practices. He is also the founder of Karma Detonation Tapes, an avant-garde music label committed to releasing works from both Taiwanese and international experimental artists, fostering a translocal network of underground sound cultures. In 2019, he initiated Outer Pulsation, a monthly guerrilla noise performance series situated in the underpasses and overpasses of Taipei, which reclaims public space through acts of ephemeral sonic intervention.
In recent years, particularly during and following the pandemic, Xu’s practice has expanded into the fields of sound installation and multimedia collaboration. His recent projects include the award-winning Booom Room (X-site Project 2021, co-sound design), a sound installation for the 2022 Taiwan Fine Art Biennial, and several ventures into performance-based media such as You Have No Time (2023, theatre music and sound design), Stone (performance art theatre, sound design), and Borboleta do Céu e da Terra (2025, dance piece by Vir Torres, sound design). Across these varied contexts, Xu continues to explore how sound operates as a critical, spatial, and affective medium.
